lamp 01 is my first foray into lamp design. Through repairing an IKEA lamp, I discovered a way to make lamp shades with pleated paper. This project was an exploration more than a finished good, and what I learned through it led directly to my next lamp. I used a mix of hand and machine made papers from Japan that I had on hand from other projects.

  • My beloved SJOPENNA Ikea lamp was designed to be held together with hair ties. Unfortunately over time these lose their elasticity, causing the lamp to fall apart.

  • This is a known issue and people have 3D printed C clips to replace the hair ties. Unfortunately, these are really hard to assemble, prompting me to design mirrored C clips that are much easier to assemble due to how you can bend the plastic to slot into place.

  • This repair job led me to realize that I could use my new clips to create lamp shades, so I did some form sketching, and decided on a truncated pyramid.

  • The pleats were made of 2 layers of Japanese paper (mismatched varieties as this was intended to just be an exploration) cut on a Cricut and glued together.

  • I 3D printed a base with simple slotted joinery as I wanted everything to be printed flat with no support necessary. As this lamp was exploratory in nature, the base was designed to be configurable with a different number of legs and support arms.
